ABOUT ANNETTE
|
My community involvement began as a volunteer classroom tutor for eight years in the grade school my three children attended. I assumed increased leadership roles and now serve as an elected member of the elementary school board.
In 2005 I was proud to be chosen as one of the keynote speakers at a rally on the Capitol steps in Sacramento demanding protection of Proposition 98 public education funding.
As president of Original Daly City Protective Association, I have focused on real life problems of working class people living in densely populated urban neighborhoods. We need to pay attention to the details that impact our lives daily, while staying informed and involved with regional and state issues that eventually have a big influence on our quality of life.
I organized a citywide parking summit to address the parking crisis in Daly City and successfully lobbied for flashing lights at a dangerous pedestrian crossing at Alp and Mission. What started as an effort to protect my neighborhood and my family's auto repair business, led me to be a proponent for a statewide initiative to protect all the homes and businesses in California from eminent domain abuse.
Our all-volunteer initiative did not make it to the ballot, but we informed thousands of Californians about the need for reform. I represent the interests of Daly City residents at regional planning meetings and all the way to statewide public hearings in Sacramento. I defend neighborhoods against gentrification and displacement. My editorials and interviews on this matter have been printed in papers across the state. I changed the California Democratic Party Platform to limit eminent domain to pure public use.
As a first generation American, I am sensitive to the issues of recent immigrants. I know that being a good citizen often means we must speak up for those who are unable to speak for themselves. My family has a diverse cultural heritage (German, Filipino, and Mexican). They are proud of my growing leadership and civic involvement. My husband and children are behind my campaign all the way and are willing to make sacrifices so that I can be a full-time Council Member. News clippings are proudly displayed at my family's business, Master's Autobody on Mission Street.
I am also committed to empowering people to speak for themselves. You don't have to be an extraordinary person to serve your community. You just have to be willing to invest the time, interest, and most of all, the heart. We can all do this together.
Democracy can work.
